DAEP Data Review

The end of the 2022-2023 school year is approaching. At this time of the year, districts and campuses begin listing tasks for the summer to prepare for the upcoming school year. Most educators use this time to review and sort data to make meaningful plans and provide information for possible changes. As districts report higher discipline and safety concerns, what data should be reviewed?

  • What are the most common behaviors of students placed in DAEPs?
  • Is any one student population being referred more than another (i.e., students with disabilities, economically disadvantaged, new students moving into the district, specific ethnicities, etc.)?
  • Are there placements made due to discretionary reasons?
  • Are there repeat offenders?

DAEP Program Review

If you are not using TxSP’s DAEP information, now is an excellent time to review all the information to ensure your District’s DAEP is comprehensive, compliant, and based on research-based practices.

  • To ensure your program is compliant, check out our section that includes a protocol on DAEP requirements, components of effective DAEP programming, and a guide to developing a handbook for your DAEP program.
  • To help parents and students understand the purpose and structure of the DAEP  program, TxSP has included an initial agenda for an intake or orientation meeting and the required notification for coursework completion opportunities to be provided to secondary students.
  • Visitations of counselors, parents, teachers, etc., should be documented, and TxSP has provided various visitation logs and a notification if certain parents are restricted.
  • Finally, returning to school after a DAEP placement can be traumatic for the student and how that transition is handled is critical. A transition plan is vital to the success of a student returning and should be individualized for each student. See TxSP’s protocol of requirements and best practices for that transition, a plan for school staff, and a student contract for success.
