How can TxSP support your district in Substance and Alcohol Abuse Prevention?
Some statutes in the law address required prevention activities for substance use and abuse, and TxSP is monitoring bills that have been introduced that may add additional requirements, particularly in the area of opioid abuse and overdose. TxSP currently has the following protocols, documents, and resources that address prevention activities to help educate students and staff.
- See Pro.Campus Opioid Prevention Actions
- See the following counseling prevention lessons for secondary students: Fentanyl, Substance Use and Abuse, 12th Grade Personal Safety, and Vaping.
- See the role of the school Counselor regarding Substance Use and Abuse.
- See the Pro.Opioids-Drug Overdose in the Nursing Section for additional prevention ideas.
- See Staff Training for Substance Use and Abuse.
How should your district intervene when there is a potential opioid overdose?
Opioid addiction and Fentanyl overdose are growing problems, not only across the nation, but in Texas. Campus staff must be ready for a student who is potentially under the influence of an opioid or who might experience an overdose while at school or at a school-related event.
- See Pro.Drug Overdose for procedures campus administrators should follow.
- See the Opioid filing drawer for procedures that should be followed by the school nurse and proper documentation to use.
What happens when a fatality occurs due to an opioid or fentanyl overdose?
All staff members have a role in supporting those dealing with the loss of a student, whether the death occurs on-campus, off-campus, or at a school-sponsored activity.
- See Crisis Response to a Death for steps campus administrators should follow.
- Meet with the school counselors to review their role in supporting students, families, and staff requiring a Crisis Response by the Campus and District Counselors.
- Ensure the campus/district lead for counselors has developed a Crisis Response Team and has provided Training for the Counselors.
- View who in the District should be available to add support to a campus experiencing a crisis requiring District Support. See District Operational Crisis Response.
