In Texas, all kindergarteners are screened for dyslexia by the end of the school year, while first graders must be screened by January 31st of each year, as mandated by Texas Education Code §38.003 and guided by the TEA Dyslexia Handbook. These screenings identify students at risk for reading difficulties, allowing for early intervention, with the goal of supporting students through Commissioner-approved instruments.  With Dyslexia screening for all Kindergarten and 1st grade students coming up in the second semester, your district may wish to review the information TxSP has included in its updates completed in November. In Texas, GT program timelines vary by district but generally follow a pattern: a fall referral window (Nov-Dec) for K-12, followed by testing (Jan-Feb), committee review, and results/services starting in spring (March/April) for the next year, with some districts having separate fall/spring cycles or year-round options. Kindergarten students are automatically considered for gifted and talented (G/T) identification.
