Have you updated your DAEP information and provided training to principals and assistant principals this school year?

Covid hit districts hard and some new laws passed in the 86th legislative session may have gotten overlooked as districts transitioned to home/virtual learning. Home campus administrators (for our subscribing districts) should review the following updated links when placing a student in DAEP to ensure due process and proper documentation is completed. District administrators may wish to review the process in their upcoming principal and assistant principal meetings.

Is your District DAEP compliant with current requirements and built on best practices?

In the protocol for DAEP programming, TxSP provides all the updated requirements, but additionally provides best practices:

  • Leadership in programming
  • Classroom management
  • Expectations for staff and the environment
  • Parent involvement and communication
  •  Monitoring and evaluating
  • Transitioning a student back to the home campus
  • Developing a DAEP handbook
  • Intake meetings

And what do we do about those students in
Kdg. through 2nd grade?

Any elementary administrator or teacher knows and has witnessed the increase of primary students with severe acting-out behavior. Although Texas Education no longer allows placement of K-2 students in a disciplinary program, Districts are provided with the option to develop an Alternative Behavior Program for that age group.

It can be challenging for districts to know how to set up and structure programs to serve this population of students. TxSP has provided a protocol and a program that the district can use to establish a research-based program using a level system to help support children to change their behavior so that they can be more successful in their learning and behavior.
