Emphasis on Prevention & Reporting
SB 2050

During the past 4 or 5 legislative sessions, we are seeing more laws being introduced and passed that focus on prevention and accountability.

SB 2050 updated TEC 37.0832 during this last legislature that continued this pattern. The new law included:

  • New requirements to place in board policy
  • Prevention & mediation requirements for students when
    • a student’s educational opportunities are disrupted Or
    • a classroom, school, school-sponsored, or school-related activity was substantially disrupted
  • Emphasizing bullying prevention when focusing on school climate and developing healthy relationships
  • Requiring each campus to have a committee to focus on prevention efforts and health & wellness
  • Requiring periodic meetings for all students to provide  instruction on building relationships and preventing bullying/cyberbullying AND
  • Emphasis on increasing student reporting
