Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, before graduating, each student must elect whether to allow the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) to share the student’s data and education records with institutions of higher education so the student can participate in the state direct admissions program.
Signing up for Direct Admissions on My Texas Future is a proactive step that helps students explore college options, reduce stress, and make informed decisions before applying for college, while also opening doors to scholarships and financial aid.
TEC §61.0511(c) requires each district and charter school, as part of the high school registration process, to annually notify each parent or guardian of a student who has earned at least three high school course credits — or not later than the end of the student’s first semester of Grade 9 — of the following:
- The option to create a My Texas Future profile or account, or to update it annually.
- The student, parent, or guardian may update or revise their own profile.
- That they may opt out of one or more of the programs offered through the portal.
- The student must indicate, as a graduation requirement under TEC §28.0257, whether the student opts in to the sharing of the student’s information.
- Are all your high school counselors aware of and using all the high school resources to ensure high school students graduate on time with their cohorts?
- Are counselors aware of all the documentation requirements for topics such as change request forms, graduation plans, financial aid, foster care support, credit accumulation, and recommendation letters?
High school counselors! Consider a treasure hunt of the protocols, documents, and letters available to you in the High School Resources section. This entire section has been updated this summer.
